SEIKO 5 - the meaning of the "5" A great marketer had the idea in the 70ies: to be a SEIKO 5, the watch has to have the following 5 (five) attributes (thus the name SEIKO 5): 1. Automatic, 2. Water resistant, 3. Shock resistant, 4. Date, 5. Day. Please note that some SEIKO 5's are in fact SEIKO 4's, if the "Day" function is omitted, then the Caliber 7S25 is used. The only difference to the normally found 7S26 is the omission of the day wheel. Also re-issues of SEIKO 5 Sports often use the 7S36 caliber. Again the 7S36 is similar to the most popular 7S26, yet it features 23 Jewels as opposed to the 21 Jewels in the 7S26. What fascinates me the most about this multi-eye sports watch is that the make of this model is motivated by Marcus Grönholm. As a former rally car driver, Marcus Grönholm would particularly enjoy the sporty design of this watch. Just notice how the slick design incorporates the ideals of athleticism in the field of watches. There is no doubt in my mind that this watch truly embodies those traits. One of the more eye-catching features for this collection is the dial numerals located throughout the watch. You will notice that the hour indicators show bold even numerals except for the 6 o’clock indicator. In place of the 6 o’clock hour is a date indicator, which shows all of the days within a month. Even during the evening, you are able to see the time because the watch numerals are luminescent. Notice how the power reserve indicator is located under the 12 o’clock position. This allows the owner to view the power that is in the spring of the watch. Since this line of watches is self-winding mechanical, the watch naturally stores power for up to 40 hours. This watch has a unidirectional bezel (ring of the watch). One captivating feature that this watch offers is the tachymeter, which is located on the inner circle of the bezel, which allows you to measure the distance of a target through the rotation of the bezel. The crown (time-setting piece) for this watch comes with shoulders for protection of the crown. Since the watch’s screw-down crown prevents water from entering the case, the watch is water-resistant for up to 100 meters. When looking at the side of the watch, you will see that the Orient logo is stamped on top of the crown. The band for this watch comes in either stainless steel metal or genuine leather. The metal band has two tapered links on both sides of the dial, followed by untapered links. It also has a combination of matte and finished metal to give a 3-dimensional effect. The clasp for the metal band is a double-locking deployment clasp. Unlike the metal band, the leather band has a deployment clasp. These clasps add extra protection so that the watch does not come off accidentally. There are a total of 6 different variations to this watch. The watches that come in metal bands come in different dial and bezel colors: black bezel on black dial, orange bezel on black dial, and black bezel on semi-white dial. The leather bands come in either black or brown. The black leather band has an orange bezel on a black dial.
